Your Guide to Managing Eczema Naturally
Eczema is excruciating! It never seems to go away and it’s just one of those added irritations that you really don’t need. Knowing you have to live with it is awful but what’s worse is when you look up the ingredients in your prescribed cortisone cream, only to find out that some of those ingredients are actually toxins with long term irreversible side effects. New hair growth in applied areas sound appealing? No thanks! So, how to you manage eczema naturally?
Let’s start with foundation. Anything that’s fragranced, scented or that contains false dyes or harsh chemicals can aggravate the skin and let’s be honest, this is just about every product on the market unless it’s completely natural. This is where using a fragrance free, toxin free, natural foundation can help. My recommendation for this is Lavera’s 10hr liquid Foundation. It comes in 6 different shades, is extremely hydrating, doesn’t cake and offers longer lasting coverage than most other natural foundations. Also check out La Mav’s BB Cream for lighter coverage (comes in 2 shades).
Evening Primrose Oil: has the ability to soothe irritated skin. It contains mamma-linolenic acid and omega-6 fatty acids which may help prevent inflammation. Black Chicken’s Love Your Face Serum contains the perfect amount of evening primrose oil AND its award winning!! A few drops are all you need. A little goes a long way.
Coconut Oil: is a natural moisturiser. Its antibacterial properties can help prevent infection which happens when cracked skin starts to ooze, allowing bacteria to get in. Eco Tan’s Coconut Body Milk is a LIFE SAVER when it comes to eczema. The bottle is a whopping 375ml and it’ll cover you from head to toe over and over again. I can personally vouch for this product because my husband has severe eczema and he absolutely loves it.
Witch Hazel: is made from the bark of the witch hazel shrub and has been used for centuries as a topical treatment to help fight skin inflammation. Acure’s Radically Rejuvenating Facial Toner contains certified organic witch hazel, it helps balance, tone and restore the skin AND its budget friendly.
Calendula: Also known as the pot-marigold, this medicinal flower is used for its incredible anti-inflammatory properties. It’s been thought to help fight infections, reduce redness, calm irritation and hydrate the skin. Weleda’s Calendula product range is great, especially their nappy change cream (yes you can use it on yourself!) I use it in areas where I have dry skin and it works for me!
Deodorant: If you’re looking for a natural deodorant that won’t irritate any eczema in your underarm area, Schmidt’s Fragrance Free Deodorant Stick for Sensitive Skin is awesome. I can’t recommend this deodorant enough. It’s so perfect for any type of sensitive skin. I’ve already sold out of it TWICE! This deodorant contains no bi-carb and it doesn’t have essential oils (which some people find irritates them) so it’s perfect for eczema prone skin.
Mallow: Ok this is the #1 best natural ingredient for eczema. What is mallow? Mallow is derived from a medicinal plant “Malva Sylvestris” which has incredible properties for reducing irritated skin. Weleda’s White Mallow range is extremely popular. Their White Mallow Face Cream has been awarded by the National Eczema Association for its ability to stimulate self-healing as well as to protect sensitive skin and alleviate irritation. I’ve personally used this cream on a large patch of eczema on my son’s chest and it was gone in just 4 days! Check it out >
Good luck with your eczema journey. Remember you’re not alone! Millions of people suffer from eczema around the world and many of them, like you, are starting to look into more natural alternatives.
